The Year in Review

Program and Partner Updates

The United Methodist Church Union would like to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Here at Church Union, it’s been one busy year and we’d like to take some time to celebrate our accomplishments. Accomplishments that wouldn’t have been possible without YOU!

Church Union was certainly not immune to the COVID-19 pandemic, but with your help, we were able to continue to help those in need throughout the whole year.

In March, Church Union was able to award 42 scholarships to children enrolled in Pre-Kindergarten Programs throughout Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas. This opportunity was made possible through our partnerships with UPMC and Pennsylvania’s Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Pre-Kindergarten Scholarship Program. The Pre-K programs and families we work with are always grateful for the scholarships, but were especially thankful this year due to the financial uncertainty the pandemic has created.

This summer, Kids Meal Network (KMN) provided a record breaking amount of meals to children at 19 sites throughout Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas. Though this was not a typical summer and all meals had to be Grab-&-Go style, the churches and other organizations we partner with did an outstanding job getting 33,000+ meals (double last year’s number) out to children in need.

Daily Bread has continued to be a blessing for individuals who are food-insecure on Pittsburgh’s Northside. Churches and organization have continued to provide warm, yummy meals in a safe way all year long to those in need, despite the pandemic. Similar to KMN, Daily Bread switched over to take-out style meals in order to keep everyone safe.

Bethany House Academy (BHA) has undergone some exciting changes this year. While the pre-school program is unfortunately unable to operate due to the pandemic, work teams have been able to deep clean and refresh the building in order to get it ready for new opportunities in the upcoming months. Local churches have been vital in helping to restore the building and we are so grateful for their continued partnerships with BHA and Church Union.

We wish you all a happy and safe holiday and can’t wait to see what we can accomplish together in the coming year!
